Fundamental Principles
Seek situations at placement where I can assess using a variety of strategies such as anecdotal notes, checklists, rubrics, etc., so that I have a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each assessment tool. Also, my curated resources provide good reference information.

Policy:
Learning Skills & Work Habits
Learn how to deal with situations when it is not possible to separate the evaluation of the learning skills and work habits from the evaluation of a student’s achievement of a curriculum expectation. For example, in the mathematics process expectations in the mathematics curriculum, one of those expectations requires students to develop and apply problem-solving strategies, which requires the application of some aspects of the learning skills and work habits for “Organization”.
Clearly identify the focus of certain curriculum expectations and the evidence that will be collected to assess and evaluate student achievement in order to determine whether the demonstration of a learning skill or work habit should be part of the evaluation of a curriculum expectation.

Performance Standards: The Achievement Chart

Practice assessing student’s work under the guidance of my associate teacher to gain a better understanding of measuring student achievement, while referring to my curated resources for the Achievement Chart and its qualifiers.

Policy:
Assessment FOR Learning & AS Learning
Fundamental to the concept of effective assessment is the idea that students will use assessments to help themselves learn better. To make that happen, I need to learn how to facilitate student self-evaluation, which seems difficult to achieve with young students.
Communicate clearly, using student-friendly language, so that students can know how to achieve their learning goals. Also, look to incorporate opportunities for peer- and self-evaluation into my lessons.
Policy:
Evaluation
To develop a common understanding with other staff members about the process for determining the final grade.
Think about why my associate teacher assigns the grades she does and ask her for her rationale.
Policy:
Reporting Student Achievement
Express clearly to parents how their students performed so parents know about their child’s strengths and weaknesses.
I intend to communicate regularly with parents throughout the year so that they are aware and able to track their child’s development, rather than surprising them when report cards are issue.
Policy:
Students With Special Education Needs
Learn how to assess and evaluate the achievement of students with special education needs.
Gather information and ideas for alternative assessments that allow students with special education needs the opportunity to demonstrate their learning.
Policy:
English Language Learners
Determine how to fairly assess ELLs given that their lack of English proficiency could hinder their ability to demonstrate their understanding of other subjects.
From my curated resources, learn and research ideas on alternative ways students can express themselves without using English such as through creation of product.
